Funding

GRANTS

Federal and State Grants are available and generally do not have to be paid back.  Completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is necessary to determine eligibility for these grants.  Fairmont State currently receives funds from the States of:  West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.  You should check with your state’s education office or your high school counselor to see if they allow you to use your state grant funds in a state other than your home state.  For more information, click here.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships are awarded based on need, merit and talent and most require an application.  Many scholarships have deadline dates that vary by scholarship.  Students may receive scholarships from Private Sources, Federal and State Funds, or from Fairmont State.  Most scholarships do not need paid back.  Click here for more information.

LOANS

Student loans are available from the Federal government and private sources.  Federal Government loans are available to all students who complete the FAFSA and meet the eligibility criteria.  Federal student loans and parent (PLUS) loans are borrowed directly from the U.S. Department of Education.  Private loans are based on credit-worthiness and generally require a co-signer.  Loans require repayment.  Click here for more information.

Parent Plus Loan applications are available at www.studentloans.gov.

WORK PROGRAMS

Student worker positions are available in almost every office and department at Fairmont State.  Click here for more information.

Federal Work-Study provides part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related to the student’s course of study.  If you’re interested in getting a Federal Work-Study job while you’re enrolled in college or career school, make sure you complete the FAFSA by March 1 and indicate on the application that you are interested in work study.  Federal Work-Study funds are awarded based on the March 1 priority date and financial need.
