Transient & Study Abroad

If you need to take classes at another institution or study abroad and plan to transfer the credit back to Fairmont State University as part of your degree program, you must submit a Consortium Agreement between Fairmont State University and the other institution.

The purpose of a Consortium Agreement is to allow Fairmont State University to consider the enrollment hours and costs to attend another school for the purpose of receiving federal aid while making progress towards completing an academic degree.

The Consortium Agreement can be used for a Transient Student and a Study Abroad Transient Student.  Please read the following information carefully to find out more about these agreements;

Transient Student (students enrolled at Fairmont State University and taking courses at another institution)

Examples of Participating Institutions (WV Northern, WVU, Shepherd, Glenville, Marshall, WVU Parkersburg, Davis & Elkins, Alderson-Broaddus, and WV Wesleyan)

1. Application for Admission at other institution as a transient student
2. Course Approval Form (from Fairmont State University Enrollment Services) 
   - or - official transcript (must have "C" average)
3. Complete Consortium Agreement and return to Fairmont State University Financial Aid Office.  Incomplete Consortium Agreements will cause a delay with processing and disbursing your financial aid.
4. You must be degree seeking at Fairmont State University during the consortium term and coursework taken under a Consortium Agreement MUST fulfill the degree requirements at FSU.
5. Transient Student’s:  an agreement WILL NOT be processed for any courses not approved by Enrollment Services (Transient Student Approval Form).
6. A new agreement will not be processed if the student fails to meet the requirements of a previously processed agreement. Therefore, after completing the consortium term, you must request an academic transcript from the host school to be sent to Fairmont State University Registrar’s office.
7. You cannot receive aid from more than one institution during the consortium term. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure the host institution understands that you are a student at FSU and they should not process any federal or state financial aid for you.
8. Fairmont State University will disburse all aid directly to the student according to the Fairmont State University disbursement schedule ONLY. Therefore, the student should make arrangements to pay by the fee payment deadlines at each institution.  Students are also required to pay all remaining fees after receiving their financial aid disbursement.
9. The student must notify both institutions if they drop or withdraw from any or all of their courses. The financial aid award is based on enrollment which will be verified and monitored throughout the term as well as after the term has ended. If adjustments are made to the original course schedule provided on the transient student approval form, financial aid may be adjusted which could cause a balance due at one or both institutions.
10. The host school must be an approved Title IV institution; meaning they have a federal Title IV school code and are eligible to process federal financial aid.

Study Abroad Student (kei)

1. The Authorization Form must be completed and submitted to Sarah Sakaguchi at sarah.sakaguchi@fairmontstate.edu or in-person at 311 Turley Center.
