WV State Mathematics Field Day Winners Announced

The 45th Annual West Virginia State Mathematics Field Day was held on April 26-27, 2019 at Fairmont State University in Fairmont, WV.  Operated and organized by the West Virginia State Mathematics Field Day Organization, the event was sponsored in part by the NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium and the West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics. 

NASA grant funds cybersecurity research

Fairmont State University has received $26,300 in grant funding from NASA’s Software Assurance Research Program to conduct research in cybersecurity. 

The project is intended to give Fairmont State students real-world opportunities. Cybersecurity students will have the chance to gain experience performing tasks often conducted in their field. In addition, math students will have the chance to develop predictive models based on project data.

Three Fairmont State University math department faculty members, along with seven Fairmont State pre-service mathematics teachers, attended the 2018 West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics annual conference March 16-17 at the Stonewall Jackson Resort during spring break.

Four Fairmont State Math Department faculty members, along with eight FSU pre-service mathematics teachers, attended the West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Conference on March 17-18 at the Stonewall Jackson Resort during spring break. The two-day conference focused on learning from other mathematics teachers in West Virginia about ways to improve mathematics instruction.

The Fairmont State University Math Department recently hosted a guest speaker, Dr. Patrick Juola, a professor of computer science from Duquesne University, who gave a lecture titled "The History of Secrets: Cryptography and Privacy.”

Alumnus Endows LaRue Mathematics Award

A $25,000 gift from a Fairmont State alumnus will ensure that a graduating senior in Mathematics will receive the James A. LaRue Mathematics Award each year for many years to come in memory of a dedicated professor.
