Elizabeth A. Savage is a professor of English at Fairmont State University, where she also serves as poetry editor for Kestrel: A Journal of Literature & Art. The journal was founded in 1993 and has earned an excellent international reputation as a competitive and skillfully designed literary magazine. Three Cities will feature more about the journal in a future issue.

Gathering of Writers Celebrates Kestrel 31

When poets and writers gather for a weekend of readings and fellowship, the mutual appreciation and inspiration are almost visible floating in the air. On April 11 and 12, the Fairmont State University Department of Language and Literature hosted such a group in celebration of Issue 31 of Kestrel: A Journal of Literature and Art.

The Fairmont State University School of Fine Arts Department of Music celebrates the spirit of musical connection with its Spring Music Gala at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, in Colebank Hall.

Admission is free to the performance with a donation to The Soup Opera. Representatives will be at the concert to collect canned goods and other donations. For more information, call (304) 367-4219.

Poetry Skills Collide in Haiku Death Match

The Fifth Annual Haiku Death Match will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at the Ruth Ann Musick Library in Multi-Media Room A. As part of the event, three Fairmont State University alumni will compete for victory through poetry.

The event is open to the community as well as the students, faculty and staff at Fairmont State. Refreshments will be served. 

Kestrel Sponsors Poetry Reading on April 20

On Friday, April 20, Kestrel will be sponsoring a reception and reading from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center, featuring poets Gerry LaFemina and Christophe Casamassima. The event is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served.

English Professor Publishes Poetry Collection

Dr. Elizabeth Savage’s first full-length collection of poems, now available from Furniture Press Books, might be called "Grammar" and be inspired in large part by a 1946 grammar textbook, but don’t expect any lengthy lectures or tedious sentence diagramming here. Savage, a professor of English at Fairmont State University, is known for her sparse and tight poetry and this 50-poem collection is no exception.
