This semester, Fairmont State University students have the unique opportunity to take classes toward a new Museum Studies minor from an accomplished guest faculty member.

Patricia Ruth Musick is teaching “Folk Arts,” part of the Museum Studies minor, now housed in the College of Liberal Arts Department of Social Science.

A team of Fairmont State University students has been awarded a $4,000 grant from the ARC as part of the 2014 Appalachian Teaching Project.

The Calabria-West Virginia Heritage Association and the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center at Fairmont State University are hosting a speaker in November as part of their Folk Culture Lecture Series.

The West Virginia Storytelling Guild and the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center are sponsoring two events with the theme “Grimm and Beyond” on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14 and 15.

The Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center will host an Old-Fashioned Folk Dance/Cake Walk from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30.

A local family has donated a first edition set of Civil War history books to Fairmont State University and the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center in honor of Norman L. Kronjaeger.

The Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center at Fairmont State University will host folk music events on Thursday evenings this fall.

As part of the Introduction to Folk Music class taught by Lynette Swiger, a folk music concert featuring Elmer Rich and Mark Crabtree is planned for 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, in The Great Room of Cultures at the Folklife Center. The public is invited to attend. Admission is free.

The Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center is sponsoring a new art exhibit in downtown Fairmont exploring the common theme of identity.

West Virginia author Jayne Anne Phillips, who has received acclaim for her novel “Quiet Dell” and other works, will speak on the Fairmont State University campus on Thursday, Sept. 11.

The event, sponsored by the Office of Student Activities, will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, in the Falcon Center third floor conference rooms. Admission is free and open to the public.

The Fairmont State University College of Liberal Arts honored its high achieving students during the fourth annual Academic Awards Ceremony at the end of the spring 2014 semester.

Dr. Deanna Shields, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts; Dr. Christina Lavorata, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs; and Mary Jo Thomas of the Fairmont State Foundation Inc. presented greetings and congratulations to the students for their academic achievements.
