Dr. Robin K. Payne, Associate Professor of History, has been named Associate Director of the Honors Program, according to Dr. Richard C. Harvey, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.  Next June, Dr. Payne will become the Director of the Honors Program.

Fairmont State University’s Honors Program hosted its annual Quiz Bowl at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct.21 with Parkersburg High School’s team placing first among the eight schools competing.  Members of that team, coached by Linda Hindman, included Andrew Gnegy, Aaren Hardy, Chase Mayo, and Bairan Sundaram.

Three Honors students have been selected as presenters during the 51st annual conference to be held by the National Collegiate Honors Council in Seattle, Wash., on Oct. 12-16.

The conference highlights student and faculty research presentations from across the nation and provides training and development for honors program administrators. Sherman Alexie, poet, filmmaker and best-selling author, will provide the plenary session on Friday.

Fairmont State University’s Honors Program hosted its annual Quiz Bowl at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17.  Nine teams from West Virginia high schools competed for first place. The schools participating in this year’s competition were Cameron High School, East Fairmont High School, Liberty High School, River View High School, South Harrison High School, University High School and Woodrow Wilson High School.

Fairmont State University’s Common Book for 2015-2016 will be “Persepolis,” according to Dr. Deborah Nestor, Chair of the faculty Common Book Committee.

This autobiographical graphic novel is a coming-of-age story that explains the struggles of college-age student Marjane Satrapi in Iran.

Two Fairmont State University seniors were selected to participate in the 12th annual Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol on Wednesday, March 4. More than 100 students from across the state shared original research projects highlighting the importance of West Virginia higher education to the state Legislature.

A Fairmont State University student has been selected for an internship under the Disney College Program.

Erika A. Johnson, a junior at Fairmont State and a member of the Honors Program, is majoring in Theatre. The internship runs from Aug. 1, 2014, through Jan. 7, 2015. As part of the internship, Johnson will complete a three-credit class along with work in the Costuming Department.

Top high school seniors in North Central West Virginia and around the state have the opportunity to compete for Fairmont State University’s premier academic scholarship, the Dr. Charles J. McClain Presidential Scholarship. In addition, all of the state’s PROMISE Scholars are eligible for the PROMISE Beyond Scholarship.

Fairmont State University has selected five student research projects for funding under the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program.

Sara Davis, Jennifer Goggins, Courtney Swiger and Ian Williams have been named to hold the University’s prestigious SURE fellowships. They each will receive a stipend of $2,400 to conduct their projects between May 13 and June 30, 2013. Completed projects will be presented at the Celebration of Student Scholarship in April 2014.
