For many students at Fairmont State University, student employment not only provides a job on campus but often times, a support system, mentorship and community. For Devinn and Jasmine Moore, Commencement was a time to say thank you to their community and to remind all of us the importance of the Falcon Family.
More than 20 students and community volunteers participated in the Make Marion County Shine and state DEP cleanup on the Fairmont State University campus in Fairmont on Saturday, April 18. The week also was National Volunteer Week. Organized by Stephanie Slaubaugh of the Physical Plant and Amy Drvar of the Office of Civic Engagement, the volunteers picked up 12 trash bags of litter in about two hours.
Fairmont State University was proud to participate in the Make Marion County Shine initiative and partner with Main Street Fairmont with a clean-up of Locust Avenue on Saturday, April 6.
Volunteers helping clean up the county represented the Occupational Safety program, Alpha Phi Sigma (Criminal Justice Honor Society), S.T.A.N.D., Tau Kappa Epsilon and Student Government. The Office of Institutional Advancement and Physical Plant also supported the initiative.
During the month of April, Fairmont State University is maroon and white – and blue – because of one family’s effort to raise awareness about autism. Corey Cleavenger, a sophomore at FSU majoring in Biology/Chemistry, had a bright idea and approached the Physical Plant that maintains the shared main campus of FSU and Pierpont Community & Technical College.

She says, “This place looks like an estate!” Colanero says that compliments like that keep him and his crew in the Physical Plant and Road and Grounds Department motivated. “We want our visitors’ first impression to be ‘Wow, this is nice,’ ” he says.
