Fairmont State University professor named ASCE WV Educator of the Year

Fairmont State University Professor of Engineering Technology, Tia Como, has been named the American Society of Civil Engineers WV Section Educator of the Year. The award is given annually to an ASCE member and educator who has positively impacted the lives of their students inside and outside the classroom.

“I was very surprised,” Como said when she learned she had received the award. “I was speechless, which is very unlike me because I can usually always find something to say.”

Fairmont State University’s American Society of Civil Engineers team placed 12th at the 35th Annual National Concrete Canoe Competition taking place over the weekend at Louisiana Tech University.

Fairmont State Engineering Technology Students Draft State Infrastructure Report Card

Students in Fairmont State University’s Department of Engineering Technology have collaborated with the American Society of Civil Engineers West Virginia Section to draft the first-ever Infrastructure Report Card for the state. 

The inaugural report was part of a special topics course taught last spring by Fairmont State Engineering Technology Professor, Tabitha Lafferre E.I., who was recently named the 2020 WV Young Civil Engineer of the Year. 

ASCE Chapter Wins 14th Regional Concrete Canoe Competition

Fairmont State University’s American Society of Civil Engineers Student Chapter continues its tradition of excellence and for the 14th consecutive year will represent the region at the National Concrete Canoe Competition. This victory and its subsequent invitation to the national competition will tie the national record for the most consecutive national appearances.

Fairmont State University’s American Society of Civil Engineers Student Chapter continues its tradition of national excellence. For the 13th consecutive year, FSU represented the region at the ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition. This year, the team placed 12th in the nation overall, tying its previous best ranking, and broke a record in the women’s sprints with a ninth place finish.
