Fairmont State University Board of Governors have again voted to expand community-based theatre and music/choir programming and to discontinue academic programs in music and theatre, including music and theatre education during the June 18, 2020 meeting.

On Thursday, May 21, the Fairmont State Board of Governors (BoG) voted to enhance the community theater and music programs, including the programs provided by Academy of the Arts and discontinue the academic programs in theatre and music. These programs had been under review for consecutive years because neither academic program met minimum standards established by the WV Higher Education Policy Commission (HEPC) for continuation.

West Virginia Governor Jim Justice has announced the appointment of WV native Rusty Hutson to the Fairmont State University Board of Governors. 

“We’re thrilled that Rusty Hutson has been appointed to the University’s Board of Governors. He brings years of experience and a keen governance acumen,” Martin said. “As a Fairmont State University graduate, he also appreciates our mission, recognizes our opportunities, and has an enduring fondness for Fairmont State.”

Fairmont State University Board of Governors Chairwoman Dixie Yann was awarded the Rev. Squires Lifetime Achievement Award at the 66th Annual Marion County Chamber of Commerce Dinner. 

This achievement is the highest award the Chamber gives, Chamber President Tina Shaw said. Rev. Squires was the leader in giving back to the community and those presented with this award working to carry on that legacy.

Governor Jim Justice has appointed two new members to the Fairmont State University Board of Governors—Wendy Glover Adkins and David Goldberg. Additionally, current Board member, Jay Puccio, was reappointed.

Board of Governors approves academic restructure

During today’s bi-monthly meeting, the Fairmont State University Board of Governors approved a proposed academic restructure that will reorganize the current two college and four school model to a two college model. The proposal now goes before the West Virginia HEPC and then on to the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has appointed a new member to the Fairmont State University Board of Governors. Aaron L. Hawkins of Fairmont, a 1971 graduate of Fairmont State, attended his first board meeting on Thursday, Oct. 16.

The FSU Board of Governors determines, controls, supervises and manages the financial, business and education policies and affairs of FSU.
