Fairmont State to offer first-generation rising freshmen immersive summer programs

Fairmont State University will provide opportunities for first-generation incoming freshmen to engage in summer internships and immersive programs prior to the fall semester.

Fairmont State will serve as a host site for three First2 Network internships taking place July 10 – 23. Faculty in the University’s College of Science & Technology will lead the following internships:

Throughout the month of April, Fairmont State University students, faculty and staff celebrated Earth Day through various programming that was focused on creating environmental awareness and promoting sustainability. Many of those efforts are also present on the University’s campus year-round, but Professor of Chemistry Dr. Erica Harvey says April 22 often serves as a reminder of our shared commitment and obligation to our planet.  

Fairmont State Alumna receives National Science Foundation Fellowship

As a high school senior at North Marion High School in Farmington, West Virginia, Hannah Haller was ready to receive her diploma, turn her graduation cap’s tassel to the left and begin making the short commute to Fairmont State University, her hometown institution, where she planned to become a biology student with the ultimate goal of pursuing dentistry – a career choice she viewed as both logical and financially sound.

Fairmont State University’s Chemistry Program receives ACS Approval

The American Chemical Society Committee on Professional Training recently extended continuation of its approval to Fairmont State University’s chemistry program. The approval is the result of the committee’s periodic review, a process which is conducted every six years to assess the ability of colleges and universities to prepare their students for successful employment as professional scientists.

Dr. Erica Harvey, a professor of chemistry at Fairmont State University, has been named one of five finalists for the Faculty Merit Foundation’s annual Professor of the Year award. Harvey was nominated by Academic Affairs for her work in and outside of the classroom.

Fairmont State University students in the College of Science and Technology presented their research during the 90th Annual Meeting of the West Virginia Academy of Science was held at West Liberty University on April 11.

Donation from Novelis Inc. to Aid Campus Recycling Efforts

A $10,000 donation from Novelis Inc. will aid recycling efforts on the shared main campus of Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College.

The donation was made by the Novelis Fairmont plant as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility program known as Novelis Neighbor.
