Fairmont State professor awarded Higher Education Art Educator of the year award

The West Virginia Art Educators Association (WVAEA) has awarded Department of Architecture Art & Design Chair and Associate Professor of Art, Joel Dugan, with the Higher Education Art Educator of the year award.

“It is an honor to even get nominated and to receive the award,” said Dugan. “Knowing that it is coming from peers that I have interacted with means a lot and is a huge compliment.”

Even with changes due to COVID-19, Fairmont State University’s Joel Dugan, chair of the Department of Architecture, Art, and Design, and a group of students were able to complete their public mural project in Palatine Park in just 10 days.

Over 250 high school students from across the state attended the Fairmont State University Art, Architecture, and Design Exploration Day held on campus on Tuesday. 

Joel Dugan, Chair of the School of Art, Architecture, and Design, said this year they wanted to make the event more interactive and immerse the students into the culture of Fairmont State. Undergraduate students welcomed the high schoolers and guided them around while they were on campus.

Fairmont State University has partnered with Main Street Fairmont to provide 20 double-sided street banners to help decorate downtown for the annual Feast of the Seven Fishes and the 200th anniversary.

Joel Dugan, chair of the Department of Architecture, Art & Design, said with students in his 2D design class, they were each given the task of creating a side of the banner to represent the Feast and one to represent that 200th birthday for Fairmont.

Art professor paints portrait of “lost history”—first female president in higher ed

During Spring Commencement, Fairmont State University unveiled the portrait of Margaret Elizabeth Dickey, a pioneering Fairmont State president and the first female president of a state school in the history of the state of West Virginia and in the U.S. 

Joel Dugan, associate professor of art, was commissioned to paint the portrait based on a photo from what was the Normal School’s yearbook. While challenging, Dugan said it was a great experience.

The Fairmont State University Department of Art is excited to announce the solo exhibition “In The Midst Of” by Joel T. Dugan in the J.D. Brooks Gallery at Fairmont State University.

The show is currently on display from September 17 through October 12 with the artist talk and reception taking place Thursday, September 27th at 3:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and community.
