Retired Educators Establish Planned Gift Further Supporting Scholarship for Education Majors

In 2016, a Philippi, WV, native and his wife established an endowed scholarship supporting education majors at Fairmont State University. The couple has recently arranged a planned gift as part of their estate plan and additional cash funds to further support aspiring teachers through the existing Dr. Bob and Susan Hawkins Endowed Scholarship.

Dr. Julia dos Santos, Fairmont State Exercise Science Assistant Professor, is using her expertise to create opportunities for students to gain valuable experiences beyond the traditional classroom setting. With more than 60 research publications, dos Santos has worked to establish collaborations with Fairmont State students and international faculty to ensure all her students have publications in national journals upon graduation.

Fairmont State University’s Teacher Education program has earned national accreditation by demonstrating excellence in the areas of content and pedagogy, clinical experiences, selectivity, program impact, and capacity for continuous improvement. It is one of 42 providers from 23 states and the District of Columbia to receive accreditation for their education programs by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

Many of the awards and scholarships presented at the banquet were made possible through gifts to the Fairmont State Foundation, Inc.
