On Sunday, April 7, Fairmont’s Arts and Humanities Commission will present its annual awards to local individuals who have shown sustained achievement in the arts, to the educators and other mentors who inspire those efforts and to talented high school and Fairmont State University students.

Fairmont State University theatre professor Dr. Francene Kirk will perform her original “informance”9 Before IX for the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) in Knoxville, TN. The SETC Fringe Festival is a performance festival that takes place each year during the annual SETC Convention. This year’s Fringe Festival, now in its 16th year, will feature five original works. Performances will be held on Friday, March 1, and are open to all convention attendees. 

Fairmont State University Assistant Professor of Art, Kylie Ford’s work “Bisection” was recently included in Marshall University's 8th Annual National Juried Exhibition at the Charles W. and Norma C. Carroll Gallery. Ford's work was selected by juror Steven Matijcio, Curator of the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Department of Music announced today, October 31, that beginning in the spring of 2019, students can add musical theater as a minor to all majors on campus. 

The degree is designed for students interested in performing musical theater and will provide hands-on training and experience. As one of the only universities to offer the musical theater minor in West Virginia, Fairmont State is excited to offer this unique opportunity to students. 

The Fairmont State University Department of Music is excited to host an evening of pleasant music and sweet desserts. “A Noteworthy Performance” will take place on Thursday, October 18th, at 7:30p.m. at Noteworthy Sweets located at 91 Fairmont Avenue in Fairmont WV. The live performance is free and open to the public. 

The Fairmont State University Department of Music is proud to present recording artist and international performer, Dr. Andrea Kapell Loewy, at the Folk Life Center on the campus of Fairmont State on Wednesday, October 3rd, at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Loewy will present a solo flute recital titled, “Colors of the Solo Flute in Song and Dance.” The event is free and open to the public.

The Fairmont State University Masquers and Town & Gown Players are proud to present “The Addams Family”, a musical comedy which includes themes of inclusion, acceptance, love, family, honesty, and coming of age. The play will be performed in the Wallman Hall Theatre on the campus of Fairmont State on October 26, 27 and November 1, 2, 3 at 7:30 p.m., and on Sunday, October 28, at 2:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at 304-367-4240.

Fairmont State University is hosting Mara Newbery Greer as the artist-in-residence for the 2018-2019 academic year for the Theatre Program in the School of Fine Arts.

The Artist-In-Residence program is designed to enhance the academic and curricular arts programs of the University. It provides the opportunity for faculty development and growth as well as a valuable intellectual and cultural resource for the community. 

Open auditions will be held for the Fairmont State University Town and Gown production of “The Addams Family”, a musical comedy based on the cartoons of Charles Addams. The audition for “The Addams Family” will be held on Saturday, August 25.  The singing audition will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dance auditions will follow at 3:30 p.m.  

As part of the Marion County Public Library’s summer reading program “Libraries Rock,” local musicians gathered at the library to showcase their instruments during the Meet the Orchestra event.

Children had the opportunity to spend an afternoon at the library to learn about the different instruments in an orchestra.
