Is Housing Open and accepting applications for Fall 2020?

Yes, the plan is that campus, including the residence halls, will be open in Fall 2020.  In an effort to maintain health and safety, the following procedures will be put into place: 

  • Requiring that masks be worn at all times when you are not in your assigned residence hall room, even if you are just running to the bathroom. 
  • Temporarily closing locations in the residence halls where students can gather. 
  • Eliminating visitation from people who don’t live in your assigned residence hall. We are also strongly discouraging students from visiting others within their assigned residence halls. 
Are the residence halls at full capacity for Fall 2020?

Not at this time. If you are interested in living on campus, please apply via the Housing Application link on myFairmontstate.

Will there be a Health Screening as Part of Move-in?

Yes; Upon arrival to campus, all persons traveling with you must be health screened at the Wellness Tent.  Students will be COVID-19 tested at the Wellness Screening Tent, in addition to being screened. The screening includes taking your temperature and answering a questionnaire. We will keep students/parents informed of the Wellness Screening Tent locations.

All students and guests must first report to the Wellness Tent for a screening. After passing the health screening and getting COVID-19 tested, you will be permitted to go to your assigned residence hall to check-in and unload your belongings. At this time, you will receive your keys to your new home! 

If a student or any person traveling with the student does not pass the health screening, they will not be permitted to drop off their belongings in their residence halls. We are requiring these students to vacate campus and self-isolate off campus for 14 days prior to returning. Upon returning to the residence halls to move-in their belongings after self-isolation, these students will not be permitted to bring an additional person with them to move in their belongings. 

How do I register to Move-In?

You may schedule your Move-In time at First-time Freshman have the ability to register for ONE time-frame between the dates of August 9-11. Upperclassmen students must register for ONE time-frame between the dates of August 16-18. Make sure you register for a time that will allow you to come to campus, be screened and tested, and unload your belongings before your guest must leave.

Registration is simple. Select the time-frame that works best for your schedule and click “Begin Registration.” A form will populate for you to complete. We are asking for your name (no nicknames), email, student number (F or R Number) the best phone where we can reach you if something should change, and your residence hall and room number. Don’t forget to check your housing application to verify your exact residence hall and room number for registering!

Following your registration, you will receive a confirmation email. Please save that confirmation for your records. If you are still unsure how to register for move-in, feel free to review a short instructional video by clicking here. If you do not register for a move-in time frame by August 6, 2020, you will be assigned a move-in time. We cannot guarantee that this will be before the first day of classes; it is imperative that you register sooner rather than later. Move-in time-frames are available on a first-come, first-served basis. For our students and families who are traveling from out-of-state, please feel free to secure lodging at local hotels. We will not offer any lodging on campus.

I need more than 2 hours to move-in, can I sign up for Two slots?

No. Once you arrive to your residence hall (after being health screened and tested) please move all of your belongings into your room and get settled.  You are permitted to stay on campus after you move-in and receive your keys, but your guest will be required to vacate campus at the end of the 2-hour time-frame.

Will there be assistance when I am moving in my belongings?

Move-In will be an independent process. There will not be carts or buggies available so feel free to bring your own for use.

Can I have more than 1 guest to assist me?

No; You are permitted to bring one person with you to help move in your belongings. If additional people come to campus, they will be required to remain in their cars and will not be permitted to enter the residence halls for any reason, including use of on-campus restrooms.

What if I run into travel delays, and it looks like I might miss my move-in appointment?

You will need to contact the Housing Office at 304-367-4216. To keep our flow of traffic and move-in process running smoothly, we encourage all students and guest(s) to move-in during their assigned time and try to plan accordingly.

Do my roommate and I have to move in at the same time?

No! For social distancing purposes, we recommend that you and your roommate don’t drop off your belongings at the same time. 

What if I can not arrive to campus until after August 17, 2020?

You must make plans with Student Health Services to be health screened before you will be able to enter the residence halls. They can be contacted at and notify the Main Housing Office at 304-367-4216 or at Since students are residing on campus after August 10, you may not bring a guest into the residence hall to assist you.

Any advice on what to bring or not to bring?

If you visit our Guide to Success, you’ll be able to find a list of suggested items to bring and items prohibited in the residence halls. The list can be found in the Residence Hall Guide in the student resources section. We highly encourage students to limit what they bring with them for the fall semester due to the no move-in volunteers and the two-hour move-in timeslots. Please take the time to consider if you need extra furniture. Additionally, items such as winter clothes and such can always be brought later in the semester once you determine when they are needed.

COVID-19 Testing

Am I required to be tested for COVID-19?

All Residence Hall students will be tested for COVID-19 upon arrival to the campus. You will go to a Wellness Screening and Testing Tent on campus, upon your arrival.

How long does it take to be tested for COVID-19?

The actual COVID-19 test takes less than 3-5 minutes to complete.

How long will it take to get my COVID-19 results?

3-5 business days

Do I need to pay for the COVID-19 test at move-in?

No; we have worked diligently with the state and local officials to ensure that the testing our students receive is free. 

Are my guests required to get COVID-19 tested on move-in day?

Your guest(s) will not receive the COVID-19 test but they will be required to be screened. If you or any person traveling with you fails the wellness screening, you will not be permitted on campus and must return back to their permanent address to quarantine for 14 days.

Building Operations

Have you reduced occupancy in the residence halls?

The Residence Halls will operate on a traditional configuration in all halls. We know how important it is for you to have a roommate and how many of you are looking forward to that “true college experience.” If you have a specific need, we encourage you to reach out to the Residence Life Office at 304-367-4216 so we can assist you.

Are masks required in the residence halls? 

Yes; All students will be required to wear masks outside of their assigned residence hall rooms.

Is Visitation permitted in the residence halls? 

Visitation will not be permitted by any person not living in your assigned residence hall. We strongly discourage students from visiting other students within their assigned residence hall. This is for health and safety reasons.

Will there be RAs?

Yes; RAs will continue to be assigned to each floor within the residence halls and will continue to support you.

Will there be programming in the residence halls?

Programming will still take place in all halls, and your RAs are excited to see you virtually and otherwise!

What do I do if my roommate is acting in a way that I think might be putting me at risk or is unsafe?

We all have a responsibility to make smart decisions to keep our campus community safe. If you feel your roommate is acting in ways that might be unsafe or putting you at risk, please start by talking with your roommate. Express your concerns and discuss why campus safety measures put in place are important. If, after this conversation, you are still experiencing concerns, please speak with your Resident Assistant or Residence Director. After completing all of these steps, if you are still unable to resolve the situation, please contact the Main Housing Office at 304-367-4216 and a member of our management team will assist you. Students may also e-mail our Student Conduct Office at or call the Student Conduct Office at 304-367-4277.

Will common areas such as kitchens, study lounges, and computer labs be open in my residence hall?

The availability of these areas will vary from building to building. There will be some community space open in each building. Each of these spaces will have posted occupancy limits set by our Emergency Management Team. Students are expected to wear masks when in these areas and comply with the posted occupancy limits.

The lobby kitchen in each building will be closed.

Community microwaves will remain available in some areas.

Can I still use the laundry room?

Laundry rooms will continue to operate as they have in the past. Each laundry room will have a maximum occupancy limit posted outside of it. Students are expected to wear masks and follow the occupancy limits, which were set forth by the Emergency Management Team, when in laundry rooms. Additionally, students are asked to wipe down the doors and controls on the machines before and after use.

Can I leave campus on the weekends?

Yes, students are permitted to leave campus for the weekend. We ask that students use judgment when traveling or attending off-campus events. Students are asked to avoid attending large gatherings where people are not social distancing or wearing masks. If you need to travel to an area with a large amount of COVID-19 infections or a place where social distancing may not be possible, please speak with your Residence Director in advance. You may be required to self-isolate prior to your return to campus.

Do the air filters have a high MERV rating (can filter bacteria/virus)?

We use standard MERV 8 filters

Will there be additional cleaning in the residence halls?

All halls will have additional cleaning of high touch areas on a daily basis. There will be more cleaning in the restrooms of the traditional style residence halls (Morrow, Pence, and Prichard Halls). If you are assigned to Bryant Place or University Terrace, we continue to encourage you to bring cleaning supplies and work out a cleaning schedule with your roommates.

Other Questions

When is the first day of class?

August 17, 2020 classes will begin face to face for all first-time freshman, all freshmen rank, international students, nursing students, education majors student teaching in the fall 2020 semester

Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors, and Grad Students will attend classes virtually August 17-21.

August 24, 2020, in-person classes begin for all students.

Can I still live in an LLC?

Yes! All of our LLCs will still be functioning in the fall but may look different from years past due to safety measures.

Is there Financial Assistance Available for Housing?

We encourage you to reach out to the Financial Aid Office about your specific financial situation.

Is there still a requirement for students to live on campus for their first four-consecutive semesters?

Yes, the residency requirement has not changed.

How do I get my student ID card picture taken, in advance of Move-In?
  • New Students can upload their photo on ID Web Portal before and after move-in through August 5. The Falcon Center will open for IDs on August 6.

How do I get my student ID card after Move-In

Students need to go to the Falcon Center Reception desk to obtain their Student ID Card after August 10, 2020.

Can I get my books ordered in advance?

Yes, books can be ordered online on the Book Store website

Can I eat with my friends in the Dining Hall?

Yes; 25 students will be permitted in the serving area at a time and you must wear a mask until you are seated to eat. Per the Health Department, 4 students may sit at one table. Tables are positioned 6 ft apart.

Is Counseling Services available and how do I reach them?

Yes. Due to the current pandemic, counseling services are providing their services using telehealth.  In-person appointments will be scheduled as needed. Please contact 304-333-3661 OR  to make an appointment. The hours are Monday and Tuesday 8 am-6 pm, Wednesday-Friday 8 am-4 pm.

How can I make an appointment at Student Health?
